Serving God through Prayer

The Carmelites' Charism:
Christian Unity

The Carmelites' charism is the contemplative spirit; but as a congregation, we express this spirit in a deep and abiding love for the Body of Christ in this world, in the Eucharist and in the Church.

Although each sister, as a member of the one Body of Christ, is gifted in special and unique ways and serves God accordingly; the objective of all of her work is ultimately to strengthen His Body in this world. We recognize that, as His Body, we continue his saving work in the world, and encourage others to do the same.

The Contemplative Lifestyle

Corpus Christi Carmelite sisters gather daily for the Eucharist and to say the morning and evening hours of the Divine Office in community (with additional hours if work schedules permit). Sisters also spend time daily in quiet meditation and in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

Sisters strive to live in accordance with the spirit of the Rule of St. Albert, which encourages continual quiet prayer throughout the day, meditation on the Gospels, and the common life. Sisters take perpetual vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. All goods are held in common, and sisters practice voluntary self-denial and penance.

To actively seek union with God at all times is to enjoy his response, which is immediate and generous to sincere hearts. This outpouring of God's presence within should lead us to an outpouring of charity to all those we meet.

The Apostolic Lifestyle

We desire to have joyful and generous spirits, thus our motto: "Serve the Lord with Gladness!" It is through the generous giving of self that we come closest to imitating our Lord, and in so doing, find our work easy and our burden light.

Our works are as diverse as our God-given personalities, gifts, and talents. Our apostolic works include teaching, nursing, psychological counseling, social work, parish and hospital visiting, catechetics, working in hostels for children and young adults, homes for the developmentally challenged, and retreat work. Sisters are encouraged to pursue work which will help them to develop fully as persons and religious sisters.
